A personal story

Have you ever had a thought that sounded like a fact?

Something like:

“I’m not good enough.”

“I couldn’t do that.”

“I’m just not that kind of person.”

“I need to have a ‘proper’ job to earn good money.”

These are often what we call limiting beliefs. Beliefs we hold about ourselves, our abilities or what is possible for us that can quietly shape the decisions we make.

And sometimes, we don't even realise we're carrying them.

A limiting belief I had...

When I was made redundant three years ago, I remember feeling completely lost.

For so long, I had believed that the only way I could earn a good income was by having a traditional job.

You went to work.

You received a salary.

That was how you earned money.

Simple.

So when that was suddenly taken away from me, it wasn't just my job I lost.

It challenged the belief I had about how I was capable of earning money and creating security for myself.

I genuinely didn't believe I could make money in other ways.

And because I believed that, I didn't really allow myself to explore the possibilities.

That is the tricky thing about limiting beliefs.

They can become self-fulfilling.

If you believe you can't do something, you're less likely to try.

If you believe you're not capable, you may avoid opportunities.

If you believe there is only one way to succeed, you may never explore another.

But three years later...

My income now comes from multiple different streams.

Coaching.

Dance fitness.

Workshops.

Speaking.

Operations and administrative work.

And other opportunities that I never would have considered possible back then.

The biggest shift wasn't simply finding different ways to earn money.

It was changing the belief I had about what was possible for me.

I had to stop asking:

“What if I can't?”

And start asking:

“What if I can?”

That one shift opened up a completely different way of looking at my life.

And this is why I believe mindset work is so powerful.

Sometimes, the thing standing between where we are and where we want to be isn't a lack of ability.

It's the story we've been telling ourselves about what we're capable of.

So, what belief are you carrying?

Maybe it's around your career.

Your relationships.

Your confidence.

Your body.

Money.

Your age.

Your abilities.

Or perhaps you've convinced yourself that “this is just the way I am.”

I want you to challenge it.

Ask yourself:

What am I currently believing about myself that might not actually be true?

And then:

Where did that belief come from?

Because you don't have to continue living by a belief simply because you've held it for a long time.

You are allowed to question it.

You are allowed to change it.

And you are allowed to discover that you're capable of much more than you once believed.

That's exactly what happened to me.

Three years ago, I couldn't see the possibilities.

Now, I can.

And that started with changing one belief.

P.S. If this has made you think about a belief that might be holding you back, send me an email and tell me what it is. Sometimes, simply putting it into words is the first step towards changing it.
